Aalsmeerbaan Runway undergoing annual regular maintenance from 5 to 10 May
From Monday 5 to Saturday 10 May, annual regular maintenance work will be taking place on the Aalsmeerbaan Runway. During the maintenance period, the runway will not be available for air traffic. In situations where aircraft would normally take off from or land on the Aalsmeerbaan Runway, alternative runways will be used: the Buitenveldertbaan and the Zwanenburgbaan runways.
It is necessary to carry out annual maintenance on all the runways, so that they remain in good condition for safe air traffic. The Aalsmeerbaan Runway will be undergoing restorative works on the asphalt and markings. The cabling and electrics will be checked, the rainwater drainage system will be flushed out, the grass around the runway will be cut and the lights will be cleaned or repaired. Schiphol combines as many of these activities as possible to ensure that the maintenance time is as short as possible. These works are being carried out in collaboration with construction company Heijmans.
In addition to these activities, we are also preparing for major maintenance on the Buitenveldertbaan Runway, which will take place from 10 May to 28 September. During this period, the area where the Aalsmeerbaan Runway intersects with the Buitenveldertbaan Runway will be part of the work zone. Therefore, the Aalsmeerbaan Runway will be temporarily shortened during this maintenance, and work will be carried out on the intersection of the two runways. From 29 September to 5 October, the Aalsmeerbaan Runway will be out of service again to prepare it for full-length use.
The use of alternative runways
During the maintenance, air traffic will be directed to other runways, such as the Buitenveldertbaan Runway and Zwanenburgbaan Runway. As a result, more aircraft will fly over the flight paths of these runways during the maintenance. We realise this has an impact on our neighbours. That is why we plan the runway maintenance carefully and do everything we can to carry out the maintenance as efficiently as possible.
