Buitenveldertbaan Runway out of service for 4 weeks
Schiphol will perform maintenance works on the Buitenveldertbaan Runway and a surrounding runway between Friday 22 May-Friday 19 June. The Buitenveldertbaan Runway will not be available to air traffic during these works. The works are not expected to impact runway use due to the low number of flights currently operating.
Adapted runway use
Preference will be given to the Polderbaan Runway and Kaagbaan Runway as much as possible. That is because the approach and departure routes fly over less densely populated areas than other runways. We expect that the Polderbaan Runway and Kaagbaan Runway will be used most of the time during the maintenance works and that there will be very little air traffic that uses another runway. The runway used depends on wind and weather conditions, among other things. It may be possible to use the Schiphol-Oostbaan during strong southwest to westerly winds; however, it is only available for take-off or landing traffic from the northeast. The Buitenveldertbaan Runway and the Oostbaan Runway partially follow the same flight paths.
Schedule changes
The Buitenveldert Runway was originally planned to be completely out of use for one week of maintenance. That was to be followed by infrequent use for 3 additional weeks due to maintenance works on a surrounding roadway. However, we combined planned maintenance with on and off-ramps and surrounding roadways that was planned for later this year because of the limited number of flights (due to the corona crisis). This will result in the Buitenveldertbaan Runway staying in use later this year, rather than being out of service as originally planned.
Planned activities
Regular maintenance works are being carried out on the runway itself. The works include any necessary restoration work to the top layer of the asphalt and markings, cleaning and inspection of rainwater drainage, cable and electricity checks and mowing the surrounding lawns. In addition, works are also being carried out on the entry and exit points to the Buitenveldertbaan Runway.
Major maintenance works are being carried out on the surrounding roadway. More than 26,000 tonnes of asphalt will be milled, removed and refitted; 10-km of markings will be re-applied, 25-km of cabling and 335 lamps will be replaced. These works will continue until 29 June. There have been works during which the Buitenveldertbaan Runway was able to remain in use over the past 10 days.
Residents with questions
Local residents may contact BAS, the complaints centre about air traffic to, from or at Schiphol, for more information or if they have questions about air traffic during the works. BAS’ phone number is +31 (0)20-6015555. Residents may also consult the website. The schedule may change based on weather and/or operational disruptions.
