Design teams present new Amsterdam Airport Schiphol terminal

This week, five international design teams presented their designs for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol's new terminal, which will open in 2023. The jury will announce the winning design early September, once all the formal procedures are completed.

In the years ahead, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol will be expanding the airport considerably to include a new pier (2019) and a new terminal (2023). The expansion is required in order to strengthen the competitive position of Mainport Schiphol, keep pace with the growth in aviation and continue to develop the position of ‘Europe’s preferred airport’ among both airlines and passengers.

International design teams and jury

The internationally renowned design teams that prequalified after a tender by Schiphol to present their designs are KAAN Architecten in collaboration with Estudio Lamela and ABT, UNStudio together with HOK and Arup, MVRDV with KPF and Meinhardt, O.M.A. together with WSP I Parsons Brinckerhoff, and S.O.M. together with ADPI.

Schiphol’s ambitions for the new terminal are to set a new standard in the aviation world. The new terminal must embrace Schiphol’s DNA and evolve it into the future. Specific attention had to be given to the personal character of the airport combined with a highly efficient process. . Besides that, the new terminal must be sustainable, future proof and must have the latest digital solutions.

The jury consists of Ms. Ginger Evans (Commissioner, Chicago Department of Aviation, O’Hara International Airport), Mr. Mark Husser (managing partner at Grimshaw Architects), Mr. Hans de Jonge (Real Estate expert and emeritus professor), Mr. Maurits Schaafsma (Senior Aviation Urban planner), Mr. Gerard Geurtjens (Project Director), Mr. Stefan Langerak (Senior Procurement Manager) and , Mr. Bernardo Gogna (Capital Programme Director).

Capital Programme

Royal Schiphol Group is carrying out the expansion projects under the auspices of the project organisation known as the Capital Programme, which is able to coordinate and manage the various complex, large-scale projects in an optimal way. This is necessary, as the airport must continue to operate as normal during the construction and renovation work. At the same time, the expansion requires specific knowledge and experience. Schiphol has brought this expertise together in the Capital Programme.

One terminal concept

The new terminal will form an expansion of Schiphol's existing terminal and will adjoin Departure and Arrival Halls 1. Keeping the buildings together allows Schiphol to retain the one terminal concept, and ensure that all the facilities are under one roof. The last time that Schiphol permanently expanded the terminal was in 1993, when the current Departure and Arrival Halls 3 and 4 were built.
