Preparations for NATO Summit well underway – impact on Schiphol accessibility

On 24 and 25 June, the NATO Summit will take place in The Hague. Schiphol has been designated as the point of arrival and departure for dozens of international delegations. As a result, there are extra security measures and adapted working methods at and around the airport. Schiphol is preparing intensively for the arrival of all government leaders and their delegations.

During this summit, our country will welcome dozens of heads of government, ministers and thousands of delegation members. In total, some 45 heads of government and state, 45 defence ministers and 45 foreign ministers will be present, accompanied by around 6,000 delegation members. In addition, around 800 invited guests will attend the NATO Public Forum and the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum in The Hague. Some 2,000 journalists from all parts of the world will report on the summit.

Adjusted air traffic and limited capacity 
The Polderbaan Runway will be temporarily reserved for receiving delegations and parking government aircraft. As a result, this runway will be unavailable for regular air traffic from 21 June to 27 June. At the same time, the Buitenveldertbaan Runway will be out of use for scheduled maintenance from 10 May to 28 September.

Traffic measures and expected disruption
In connection with the NATO Summit, temporary traffic measures will apply on the A5, A4 and A44 motorways and on the N44 from 17:00 on Sunday 22 June until 5am on Friday morning 27 June. This may affect Schiphol's accessibility. Road users should expect closures and delays, especially during the morning and evening rush hours from Monday 23 to Thursday 26 June.

There are no restrictions on the railway. NS will run the normal timetable. However, trains to and from Schiphol Airport may be busier. At the moment, the exact impact on local public transport companies is not yet known. It is expected that public transport services may also become busier and some may be cancelled.

Schiphol as host
Schiphol plays an important role in facilitating the safe, welcoming and efficient arrival and departure of delegations. At the same time, we continue to serve all other travellers, airlines and the surrounding area as well as possible. Schiphol is preparing intensively for the NATO Summit, to contribute to a successful event and be a great ambassador for the Netherlands. The aim is to offer all government leaders and their delegations a pleasant arrival and departure and, at the same time, to serve all other travellers in the best possible way.
