Schiphol opens temporary art exhibition New Dutch Horizons in Lounge 1
As of 17 December, travellers in Lounge 1 at Schiphol can enjoy the temporary art exhibition New Dutch Horizons. This exhibition, measuring more than 200 metres in length, displays the vision of 19 Dutch artists on the nature and culture of their homeland. This is the first time Schiphol has built an art exhibition around a construction area at the airport.
Schiphol is currently working on the large-scale redevelopment and modernisation of Lounge 1. Instead of placing the usual construction hoardings around the building site, Schiphol decided on an innovative approach that would make the area attractive to passengers. New Dutch Horizons – a 200-metre-long art exhibition where 19 Dutch artists share their perspective on their country's nature and culture – has been set up around the building work.
Artistic introduction to the Netherlands
In New Dutch Horizons the works of 19 Dutch artists, including Esther Tielemans, Jennifer Tee, Kévin Bray and Dion Rosina, are on display. These works portray the artists' perspectives on Dutch nature and culture. The exhibition therefore gives travellers at Schiphol a unique introduction to the diversity of the Netherlands.
Inspired by the point where land and sky meet, the artists created photographs, paintings and video art. The infinite horizon, at the centre of each work, connects the different perspectives of the talented creators. The exhibition contains print and video. Through the calming power of art, New Dutch Horizons encourages visitors to pause and look beyond their own horizon.
A moment of peace
Travellers can visit the art exhibition in Lounge 1, the central area where departing, transfer and arriving passengers within Europe find themselves after the security check. An audio tour is available in Dutch and English explaining the concept, the artists and the stories behind their works. The audio tour is available via QR codes and can be played on a passenger's own device.

In Lounge 1 until June
New Dutch Horizons can be seen until the renovation in the middle section of the exhibition is completed. This is expected to be in early June 2025. A retail area will then be created at this location. The art exhibition was designed with reuse in mind. All parts of the exhibit are reusable and/or recyclable. The plan is to relocate the works at Schiphol after the exhibition closes, in consultation with the artists. New Dutch Horizons was developed in collaboration with creative agencies Wink & Unchain the Tigers, Brandwacht & Meijer, specialists in set design, interior design and exhibitions and BIS|Econocom, supplier of the digital displays.
