Schiphol spearheads effort to green airports

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol will be spearheading a joint effort to enhance the sustainability of airports worldwide. On the initiative of Schiphol, airports from around the world will sign the 'Airports Sustainability Declaration' on Monday 31 October at the Airports Going Green 2016 conference hosted by Schiphol.

The letter of intent will record the airports' ambition to take significant steps in the area of sustainability over the coming years. Amongst other measures, the signatories will be collaborating more intensively, sharing successes and lessons learned, innovating and challenging their own organisations and business partners to think and act in a more sustainable manner.

The agreements reflect the airports' willingness to contribute to a better world in their capacity as part of the aviation chain. The Airports Sustainability Declaration itself reflects current developments such as the Sustainable Development Goals formulated by the United Nations, COP21 and the ICAO treaty aimed at reducing airline company emissions.

Best practices

The Airports Going Green conference will see airports, special interest groups and the business community share best practices and perspectives on the transition to a sustainable future. There will also be workshops on the opportunities offered by the circular economy, a sustainable passenger journey, purpose over profit and the reduction of emissions.

Speakers: HRH Prince Carlos de Bourbon de Parme and State Secretary Sharon Dijksma

His Royal Highness Prince Carlos de Bourbon de Parme and State Secretary Sharon Dijksma of Infrastructure and the Environment will be speaking on Monday 31 October. The Prince will engage in dialogue with the audience in order to discuss the urgency of further greening efforts and opportunities to reverse current trends. State Secretary Dijksma will be welcoming the visitors to the Netherlands and underlining the importance of global collaboration through the Airports Sustainability Declaration.

Royal Schiphol Group President and CEO Jos A. Nijhuis will be hosting the conference.

The six Airports Going Green Awards will be presented on Tuesday 1 November. These awards are recognised across the world of aviation as prestigious acknowledgements of commitment and achievement in the field of sustainability.
