Traffic and transport figures for January 2019

Five million passengers travelled from, to or via Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in January this year, representing an increase of +1.7% compared to January 2018. The number of passengers who started or ended their journey at Schiphol increased by 2.9%, while the number of transfer passengers remained almost constant with an increase of 0.1%. On average, larger aircraft came to Schiphol (2.1% more seats) with a slightly lower load factor (-0.3%). The number of air transport movements remained almost constant (+0.2%) compared to January last year.

Cargo

The number of cargo flights decreased by 17.3% this month compared to January 2018. The total volume of cargo decreased by only 9.1%, however, because more cargo (+6.2%) was transported on board passenger flights.

Passenger destinations

January saw nearly 3.4 million passengers travelling from and to European destinations (+1.5%).

Traffic to Krakow increased by 50% compared to the same month last year. Five destinations in Spain recorded double-digit growth: Ibiza, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia and Madrid.The Canary Islands lost popularity (total -18%).

In January, Schiphol welcomed 1.6 million intercontinental passengers (+2.3%). For winter sun, passengers are increasingly choosing a destination in Egypt. The number of passengers to North America increased: Canada saw 9.6% more passengers and the United States 4.4% more.
