Zwanenburgbaan out of service for maintenance works next week

Schiphol will carry out planned maintenance works on the Zwanenburgbaan Runway from Monday 11 May to Tuesday 19 May. The Zwanenburgbaan Runway will not be available for air traffic during the works in principle. Schiphol will simultaneously carry out various works on runways, taxiways, markings and lighting to ensure that the works period does not take longer than strictly necessary.

Adapted runway use

There are limited possibilities for noise disturbance in the area due to the works. The Zwanenburgbaan Runway was hardly used in April due to the low number of flights because of the corona crisis. Preference will be given to the Polderbaan and Kaagbaan Runways because the approach and departure routes come from less densely populated areas than with other runways. Therefore, we expect that there will not be much air traffic that uses a runway other than the Polderbaan Runway and Kaagbaan Runway during the works.

No flights will be moved to the Aalsmeerbaan Runway because it now being used to temporarily park aircraft. The Buitenveltertbaan Runway may be used slightly more often due to the closure of the Zwanenburgbaan Runway. The runway used depends on wind and weather conditions, among other things. In order to facilitate air traffic in all wind directions, the work will be carried out in such a way that, if necessary, the Zwanenburg Runway can be cleared for take-off or landing traffic within 48 hours.

Activities

Approximately 80 tons of asphalt will be replaced on the runways during the regular maintenance works. In addition, track markings will be redrawn, where necessary. The Zwanenburgbaan Runway’s lights will be replaced, including on the northern side of the track, if necessary. Cabling will be measured and checked. Rainwater drainage will be flushed and inspected. Schiphol will carry out the works in collaboration with Heijmans. Works are carried oud in several teams. The works continue 24 hours a day to ensure that works on the Zwanenburgbaan Runway do not take longer than strictly necessary.
