Zwanenburgbaan Runway out of use on several occasions in the coming period due to maintenance

From Monday 20th to Friday 24th of July, and from Monday 27th to Friday 31st of July, Schiphol will be carrying out maintenance on the Zwanenburgbaan Runway between 14:00 and 23:00. Between the morning of Monday 17th of August and the evening of Friday 28th of August, more works will be carried out on the runway. During these periods, the Zwanenburgbaan Runway will not be available for air traffic. Maintenance will be performed on the cabling of the runway’s lighting.

Altered runway use

Due to the limited number of flight movements, the Zwanenburgbaan Runway has hardly been used these past few months. Flight movements were at about 3 - 6% during the first two weeks of July – an average of 10 to 20 per day. The decision was made to carry out the maintenance earlier than planned in order to minimise any inconvenience to local residents. While the works are being carried out, the planes that would usually use the Zwanenburgbaan Runway will be divided between the Buitenveldertbaan Runway and the Aalsmeerbaan Runway.

Which runways are used at Schiphol depends on factors such as availability, weather conditions and environmental regulations. In general, there are always two runways in use: one for departing traffic and one for arriving traffic. Preferably, the Polderbaan Runway and Kaagbaan Runway are used as much possible, as their approach and departure routes cause relatively less noise pollution than the other runways. It is possible that a second runway is needed for take-off or landing at peak times. At these peak times, or when the Polderbaan Runway or Kaagbaan Runway are not available for use due to weather conditions, the other runways are deployed.

BAS

Local residents can contact BAS (Bewonersaanspreekpunt Schiphol) for more information about air traffic during these maintenance works. BAS is where you can go to get information about air traffic at Schiphol and to file complaints. You can do this by calling 020-6015555 or by visiting the website (Dutch language only).

Every week, a fact sheet about the restarting of flights at Schiphol is published on the website. It provides local residents with a detailed forecast of air traffic in the week ahead and it looks back at air traffic in the previous week. Schiphol keeps neighbours up-to-date on the effect of increasing air traffic in the region by way of a newsletter. Everyone can sign up to the neighbour newsletter.
