Schiphol starts building the Netherlands’ largest car rental location

New car rental location offers the opportunity to rent electric vehicles

Summary

The construction of a new car rental location at Schiphol has begun. The Car Rental Service Center will be the largest car rental company facility in the Netherlands, accommodating around 2,500 vehicles. The five largest car rental companies at Schiphol are coming together under one roof, which will be covered by 17,000 m2 of solar panels. With this facility, Schiphol is encouraging car rental companies to make the transition to electric vehicles.

Schiphol is transforming the former P4 car park into a new future-proof car rental location with a total surface area of 40,000 m2. There will be five buildings where car rental companies can maintain, repair and wash their vehicles. On top of the buildings will be one large roof with 17,000 m2 of solar panels. Construction is expected to be complete at the end of 2024.

On the way towards electric mobility
With these electric facilities at the new Car Rental Service Center, Schiphol is investing in the transition to electric mobility to and from the airport. The solar panels will generate a large amount of electricity, equal to the yearly energy consumption of around 1000 households. The new electric infrastructure will allow more than 300 electric cars to be charged simultaneously. This contributes to Schiphol's goal of making the traffic to and from the airport as sustainable as possible.

With this new location, we are not only providing the car rental companies with better facilities, but most importantly, we are encouraging the use of electric cars. If it were up to us, it would be the most normal thing in the world to drive an electric car to and from Schiphol. Together with the car rental companies, we are moving in this direction.

The design was made by De Zwarte Hond Architecten and the construction works are being carried out by Friso Bouw B.V. The construction works are expected to be complete at the end of 2024. Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Enterprise and Avis/Budget will then move from Schiphol Centre and Schiphol South to Schiphol North. Nothing will change for customers renting cars; they will still pick up their rental cars close to the terminal.
